  • To quote Billy Madison, “It’s the cooliest!” But if we’re being serious, travel opens minds, breaks down barriers, and builds confidence in students. We want to make sure the transformative power of travel is available to everyone!

  • Travel Sparq is the right organization to create these opportunities because of our values. We will instill these in our participants by pursuing a life of compassion and tolerance and harboring an adventurous spirit.

Secondly, our people. From our board of directors to our trip leads and chaperones, everyone involved in our organization is working tirelessly because we believe in our mission. Unpaid and relentless, we are ready to change students’ lives!

Lastly, our program is built for the students’ benefit. Every choice in building this program is deliberate to ensure students have a safe, transformative, and fun experience with Travel Sparq!

  • You must apply and meet our eligibility requirements. After selection, you will complete five mandatory pre-trip classes in person. These classes help combat culture shock, set appropriate expectations, and prepare you for the trip.

Then it’s wheels up as we fly to Costa Rica for two weeks. The first week will be spent working on a sea turtle conservation run by Latin American Sea Turtle Association. While there, you will be patrolling beaches for nesting turtles, helping release hatchlings, and assisting with basic tasks around the conservation.

During the second week, you will experience the cultural diversity of Costa Rica through excursions to learn more about the land of waterfalls. With coffee plantations, city tours, and national park hikes, this country’s biodiversity is unmatched!

Upon return, we will have two post-trip classes to recap the experience and discuss how they can translate into real-world skills!

Students must fill out participant surveys throughout the program, beginning with pre-trip classes. These help us gauge our effectiveness and how a student’s outlook might change during and after the program. We will also have daily guided reflections while in Costa Rica.

Keep in mind that this is a trip led by a trip lead and chaperones, you will never be expected to travel alone. Also, living conditions at the conservation are EXTREMELY basic. No internet, Wi-Fi, almost no electricity, sleeping in bunks with mosquito netting, no AC, and it is HEAVEN!

  • Keep scrolling!

    • The summer before the trip year, we will have an informational meeting that anyone (including parents/guardians) may attend to learn more about the program. No reservation is needed to attend, so come and learn what we are all about!

    • Applications will open following the info meeting.

    • All applicants are notified of their application status upon application closing. Accepted participants will receive further instructions.

  • $0. We cover the cost of passports and visas (if required), airfare, and conservation program fees. We also cover lodging, three meals/ day, and the cost of all excursions. The only cost to the participants is that of snacks and souvenirs.

  • This type of program is NOT found anywhere else in Iowa. If students are looking for traveling opportunities while in high school, their options are:

$7674 Where There Be Dragons- a program that spends four weeks in another country.

$9380 International Student Exchange- multiple locations per semester.

$4850 Counsel of International Educational Exchange- various locations for 3-week trips.

While these programs are incredible, they are utterly inaccessible to many students.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a high school student at least 16 years old at the time of application

Due to the requirements for obtaining a passport, we decided to open this program to students who can apply for a passport without their parents being there during the application. While they will still need a parental consent form and other documents, if the parent cannot be there physically, we can still apply for the passport!

  • Must live in/around Ames

Pre and post-trip classes will be held in the Ames public library. We need to make sure you are able to attend all the classes as they are mandatory.

  • Must be able to apply for and obtain an American passport

Travel Sparq will pay for your passport, but we need to make sure that students can get one in the first place! Most passports have to be applied for in person in the presence of at least 1 guardian. Check out the link and see if you qualify! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out; we’re here to help!

  • Fall Within Income Guidelines

While we wish that everyone could join us, we want to focus our program on students who are less likely to afford the opportunity to travel. See below to see if you qualify based on your family’s annual income.

  • Respect and Uphold Travel Sparq's Values

Whether you’re helping save sea turtles, lounging on the beach, or exploring the surrounding jungle, you are a representative of Travel Sparq, your community, and the United States! Travel Sparq values compassion, open-mindedness, and an adventurous spirit! If you cannot uphold these values, you do not qualify.

Income Eligibility Guidelines

In the chart to your left, you will see the Federal Government numbers used to determine whether a family is eligible for free and reduced school lunch. Travel Sparq used those numbers as a compass to fine-tune our income eligibility guidelines.

The yearly income refers to the annual revenue from the parents/guardians in the family. If a student has a job, that number is not counted in our Yearly Income total.

As you can see, we have added roughly $10,000 to the Federal numbers and rounded them slightly to make administration processes more straightforward. Still, these changes make our program available to more students!

For any family with nine or more members of the household, you will add $10,000 to the $103,500 total.

How Do We Choose Our Applicants?

If you meet all the eligibility requirements, the next thing we will do is have our chaperones go through the applications and determine who we think will benefit from the project the most!

When selecting students, we have a 3rd-party redact names, genders, and emails before the chaperones begin looking at application responses to help provide unbiased decision-making.

Suggested Packing List!

Not to brag, but we have been there, done that! (and made all sorts of mistakes!) So let us help you have the best trip possible by packing these essential items! We also provide specific items which are listed. Some items may be for temporary use (*) and others are yours to keep at the end of the trip!

Do you qualify? Cool! Now what? We are full for our 2024 trip, but keep an eye on our socials and our website for info on when the next trip is on the calendar!

~If you are interested in getting notified as soon as applications become available or just have general program questions, send us an email and let us know! Just make sure to add info@travelsparq.org to your address book so we don’t end up in your spam folder!

  • Learning about other societies will give students a better perspective of their own culture and biases.

  • Learn transferrable skills such as scientific data collection, a new language, problem-solving, and collaboration.

  • Build on competencies such as patience, adaptability, resourcefulness, and self-awareness.
